PUBLIC TRANSIT - REIMAGINE, REINVENT, RENEW, REBRAND, REBUILD

Public transit is the backbone of mobility and a resource that plays a critical role in our economy, workforce development and housing.  Over the last several years, public transit has been changing to a more sustainable, resilient, accessible, collaborative, connected and equitable model.  It is often forgotten and taken for granted; largely funded by federal and state dollars and to a lesser extent the farebox, public transit organizations play a critical role in connecting people all over the world.  The perception is that of a 'fixed route' big vehicle system, used by a low-income demographic standing at a bus stop waiting for the bus in all types of weather.  While the fixed route system is currently still is the core service, transit has expanded to a more balanced operation by providing important mobility services crossing all demographics and geographies.  And perceptions are shifting to adjust to changing human behavior, smart city planning, efficient operating budget planning, investment, workforce development and housing options.

Pre pandemic, the transit industry was already becoming mobility managers and leaders. They took the lead and stepped up quickly to provide critical and safe public transportation during the pandemic.  Transit is rebuilding, rebranding balancing an on demand type of service model while keeping the core fixed route unimpaired.  There will be an expansion of riders from underserved transit areas which will require a delicate balance of all transit services focusing on consumer choice and necessity.

There will be an increase focus on community partnerships and investment into infrastructure and equipment. The transit industry is about being creative and thinking outside the box, it's about people, partnerships; about getting people to their jobs, transporting essential medical and safety workers, students to school, first and last mile, choices for shoppers, diner and entertainment; options for ADA and senior populations.  It is about being available during critical emergency periods.

Transit is already taking the lead and launching programs that are reshaping our communities:

-mobile integration to provide 'one stop shop' rides and seamless journeys within communities and regionally.

-mobile ticket payment options collaborating with other transportation organizations

-shift and balance on demand and fixed route service models

-enhanced customer communication through multiple methods including digital platforms to better inform and engage the public

-electrify the fleet and installing priority bus routes and signalization to help the environment and reduce carbon emissions

The Parking Industry is a key stakeholder and plays an important role in our connected transportation future.  Parking is a macrocosm of tech leaders, repurposing and reusing garages and managing the curb. That says it all!
